After intense speculation and numerous rumours flying around, Valve has finally confirmed the release of upcoming action and fantasy strategy game, DOTA 2. As a sequel to the Warcraft III custom scenario Defense of the Ancients, DOTA2 combines real time strategy, perspective projections as well as role playing game elements.

In DOTA 2, much will follow in the footsteps of the original DOTA. Players will assume the role of a ‘hero’ unit, which has a maximum level of 25. Normally, strongholds, or teams, will be placed on opposing ends of a map. Put simply, the objective is to battle through the opposing teams defences and destroy their opponents’ ‘ancient’, much like a HQ. Maximum players on each game will depend on the map, and during multiplayer games, the host has the option to fill any open slots with AI bots. Valve have already stated they will keep the core game play pretty much the same as to keep the same experience, but what does this mean to players? Not many new features, but instead just graphical updates? The only new feature confirmed is a new coaching system, where experienced players will be able to tutor newer players.

DOTA 2 will again be delivered by the Steam platform system. This of course has its advantages as well as disadvantages. Requiring users to install additional software will put a lot of players off, however, Steam will ensure game content is kept up to date for all players, as well as featuring its VAC anti cheating system. Steam also adds many social and community functions to the game, making life much easier for those playing online multiplayer.

It remains to be seen if DOTA 2 will live up to its hype and continue its success gained with the original. Since the first version of the original DOTA was released 7 years ago, it has built up a massive fan base around the world and especially in East Asia, and fans eagerly anticipate news surrounding this long awaited sequel.

  1. “You possibly will have not anticipated to do thus, excluding I weigh up you have managed to fast the state of mind that a lot of people are in. :)

  2. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
